Welcome to Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki was founded in 316/315 BC takind her name of Alexander the Great's sister. The city was developed rapidly due to its prominent geographical location and became one of the most important ports, and economical and commercial centers of Macedonia and the Balkan Peninsula.

During the Byzantine era the city was further developed and becoming the second most important city of the empire after Constantinople itself. Wonderful churches and other buildings were built in several areas while extended defensive constructions took place.

During the Ottoman occupation period (after 1430 AD) the city maintained her strategic importance due to the trade routes established. It also became the new home for many ethnic communities (Sepharadites) that significantly promoted art, culture and architecture.

The city was liberated in 1912 during the first Balkan War. Today Thessaloniki is a modern European city, as always an important trade and transportation center connected to all the Balkan Countries. It is one of the largest student centers in South-Eastern Europe while many of its monuments have entered the UNESCO World Heritage List.
